Battery Park Schwerin

Performance boost for improved efficiency and stability

Initial Situation

The WEMAG battery storage power plant in Schwerin-Lankow went into operation in 2014 and was then the largest in Europe, providing 10 megawatts of primary control power. After nearly a decade of successful operation, it is now one of the battery-based power plants with the longest service record. While it operated successfully, it faced growing challenges due to outdated technology and increasing demands for IT security and system availability.

Challenge

Outdated technology and increasing requirements for IT security and regulatory compliance made a comprehensive modernisation essential. The IT infrastructure, software, and control systems were renewed while retaining the existing architecture. 90% of the upgrades were completed during ongoing operations to maintain system availability. A unified control platform for all battery storage systems in the WEMAG portfolio was also established.

Solution

WEMAG commissioned SCADA-Automation from Berlin to carry out the modernisation. As specialists in energy automation and with extensive experience in the YOUNICOS technology originally used in the plant, we developed a concept enabling gradual and secure implementation. Initially, all access points and components were analysed, vulnerabilities addressed, and the system stabilised. Closely coordinated monitoring ensured uninterrupted operations throughout the modernisation process. Based on this, tailored solutions were implemented:

Renewal of IT infrastructure
Replacement of hardware and software to establish a high-performance system architecture.

Optimised battery control
New control units for battery-inverter combinations to enhance regulation and efficiency.

Updated plant control
Integration of a modern EZA controller to meet current grid requirements.

Intuitive monitoring and control
Implementation of a user-friendly control room interface for optimal plant operation.

Reliable commissioning
Ensuring compatibility and smooth integration of all components.

Efficient battery management
Integration of the PrioHUB priority controller for intelligent capacity distribution.

Modern software architecture
Deployment of smartBAT software on Bachmann M1 control systems across 18 technical units.

Of particular note are the redundant, certified control and regulation systems—unique in their form. Battery management was seamlessly taken over by the PrioHUB controller, ensuring balanced and efficient use of storage capacity.

Outcome and Benefits

The modernisation offers the following benefits:

Future-proof technology

The battery storage power plant is now equipped with modern technology that meets current and future market requirements.

Continuous operations

The upgrade was completed without significant interruptions, ensuring ongoing commercial availability.

Unified control platform

The new control system enables integration of all battery storage units in the WEMAG Group.

Enhanced IT security

The updated infrastructure meets the highest security standards and reduces operational risk.

Competitive advantage

The upgrade enables WEMAG to maintain its leading position in the battery storage sector and secure a strong role in the balancing energy market.

Conclusion

The modernisation of the battery storage power plant in Schwerin highlights the importance of technological advancement for a sustainable and secure energy future. With state-of-the-art systems and a unified control solution, WEMAG is ideally positioned to further strengthen its role as an innovation leader. The project clearly demonstrates how strategic investments can ensure long-term competitiveness.
