The Microgrid EMS at the Education and Innovation Campus of the Potsdam Chamber of Crafts in Groß Kreutz was developed over two years by the SCADA-Automation team. It is a central element at the German Competence Centre for Energy Storage and Energy System Management, which opened in April 2022.
The zenon-based EMS we developed not only actively controls all energy systems, but is now being used for seminars and courses on energy management of the future at the Chamber of Crafts. In conjunction with the control system of the WEMAG battery storage system, which we also supplied, and in interaction with 144kWp PV systems, micro wind power and a redox flow home storage system, the EMS of the SCADA automation manages the complex energy supply of the education and innovation campus in Groß Kreutz.

The Microgrid EMS of the BIH in Groß Kreutz implements an island grid together with the WEMAG battery storage system if required. For this, a real separation of the regeneratively supplied island grid area from the utility-coupled domestic grid is realised. In order to do this, the EMS works together with the Bachmann M1 controller and the Bachmann GSP mains protection and synchronisation module.

Special attention was paid to the intended use of the solution in the context of workshops and further training. This is evident, among other things, in the possibility of generating data evaluations from over 300 measured values of the entire system. The archived data is also made available to Lucas Nülle’s trainer stands, and it is sent to an external WordPress website with dashboard functionality to the microgrid. Furthermore, it was realised to change the parameterisation of many setting parameters within the scope of the advanced training courses in order to be able to evaluate the effects in the microgrid, the energy storage systems and at the grid connection point.

The modern design with anthracite background immediately catches the eye and provides a glare-free overview.
Especially in the single-line diagram view, this makes it particularly easy to distinguish current-carrying connections.
A special highlight is the Sankey diagram of all producers and consumers, which visualises the changed proportions of the energy flows to each other in real time.

Graphical diagrams are supplementing scores of detail views of the plant, including functions for manual operation of the plant.
This also includes the central view of the EMS, where it is possible to choose between different modes of operation.

Thus, the grid-serving operating mode optimally supports the consumption values at the grid connection point, while in the self-consumption-optimised operating mode, only available, surplus renewable energies are stored. All setting parameters can be changed within the scope of the competence centre’s educational mission and are stored separately for each operating mode with the help of the zenon Recipe Group Manager – and retrieved again.
