Optimised energy flows
Intelligent control and visualisation increase efficiency and ensure optimal use of renewable energy.
The Chamber of Crafts Potsdam (HWK) operates a forward-looking training and research platform at the Competence Center for Energy Storage and Energy System Management. The goal is to integrate state-of-the-art technologies such as photovoltaic systems, small wind turbines, battery storage, and redox flow systems into a practical environment to train professionals and interested parties in the application of innovative energy systems.
To achieve this ambitious goal, a customized microgrid energy management system (EMS) was needed to efficiently control the complex energy supply of the educational and innovation campus in Groß Kreutz. Home - Competence Center for Energy Storage and Energy System Management Current developments in decentralized energy supply, offers, news. Seminars and further training on photovoltaic technology.
The biggest challenge was to integrate various energy sources such as a 144 kWp photovoltaic system, micro wind turbines, a WEMAG battery storage system, and a redox flow home storage system into a single system. In addition, the energy management system had to be capable of creating an island grid when needed and ensuring a seamless transition between grid and island operation. Furthermore, the system should evaluate and visualize a variety of measured values and parameters, and fulfill its educational mission through interactive training opportunities.
Over two years, SCADA-Automation developed a zenon-based EMS that actively controls all energy systems. As the core element of the competence centre, our solution links the different generators and storage systems into one highly efficient unit.
Seamless integration and control
In combination with the WEMAG battery storage control and other components such as the PV system and micro wind turbines, the EMS enables a reliable island grid. The separation of the renewably supplied island grid from the utility-connected grid is ensured via the Bachmann M1 controller and the Bachmann GSP grid protection and synchronisation module.
Interactive training features
Our system not only makes energy supply efficient but also tangible: Participants in training courses can analyse over 300 measurement points and adjust parameters within the microgrid to assess real-time impacts.
Clear visualisation
A highlight is the Sankey diagram that visualises energy flows between generators and consumers in real time. This is supported by graphical evaluations and a single-line diagram view that clearly highlights current-carrying connections.
Flexible operating modes
With our EMS, users can choose between different operating modes: grid-supporting mode optimises consumption at the grid connection point, while the self-consumption mode efficiently stores surplus renewable energy.
The energy management successfully implemented by SCADA-Automation brought the following benefits:
Optimised energy flows
Intelligent control and visualisation increase efficiency and ensure optimal use of renewable energy.
Practical training platform
The EMS is not just a control system but an interactive tool for practical training, allowing participants to experience functions and parameters first-hand.
Future-proof
The system is flexible and scalable, making it easy to integrate future developments and new technologies.
Sustainability
By efficiently utilising surplus renewable energy, the system contributes to sustainability and reduces grid load.
With the microgrid EMS installed at the competence centre, we and the Chamber of Skilled Crafts Potsdam have created a future-proof solution that equally meets technical demands and educational goals. This project demonstrates how close cooperation and innovative technologies can set new standards for the energy transition.
